Algebra, Formula, and Equation – Practice Worksheet
  1. What is Algebra? Algebra uses letters and symbols to represent unknown numbers. These letters are called variables. Example: x + 5 = 10 → x = 5
  1. What is a Formula? A formula shows the relationship between different quantities using symbols. Examples: Area of Rectangle A = l × w Speed Speed = Distance ÷ Time Area of Triangle A = ½ b h
  1. What is an Equation? An equation shows that two expressions are equal using an equal sign (=). Example: 3x + 2 = 11 → x = 3
  1. Practice Exercises
  1. Solve for x: x + 4 = 9
  1. Solve for y: 3y = 15
  1. Use the formula A = l × w to find the area when l = 6 and w = 5
  1. Use the formula Speed = Distance ÷ Time to find the speed when Distance = 100 km and Time = 4 h
  1. Write an equation: A number added to 7 equals 10 Answers
  1. x = 5
  1. y = 5
  1. A = 30
  1. Speed = 25 km/h
  1. x + 7 = 1025-Minute Year 9 Algebra Challenge

Example Dialogue (Parent–Child Learning Moment)
Parent: Do you know what algebra is used for?
Child: To find unknown numbers?
Parent: Exactly! When you see something like x + 5 = 10, you’re solving for x.
Child: Oh, so x equals 5 because 5 + 5 = 10!
Parent: Correct! And when you use a rule like Area = length × width, that’s a formula.
Child: So a formula is like a recipe for maths!
Parent: Yes, and when two sides are equal, it’s called an equation.
